Punching the greens

We wanted to send out a post about some of the course projects that we have been doing. This was the first year in a few that we were able to get the fertilizer application on that was required. The course has sprung to life and the grass is taking to the application beautifully. June 21st was aerifacation day at Jones Creek. The aerifying went great and the greens should be excellent in a few weeks. We would like to give a special thanks to all the volunteers (Wymans Warriors)

that came out to fill divots and do some general maintenance on the course.  The difference in the fairways was great and we thank you for making your course the best.

Nicoles 2010 Professional Season gets started.

I’d like to give you an update on my first two events this year.

My first tournament was a Duramed Futures Tour event in Winter Haven, FL.  Jody Keepers, my boyfriend, was able to caddy for me so that was quite nice.  We drove down together and stayed with a terrific family in a beautiful home on a lake.  We shot 70-74 to finish T-16th after the last round was canceled due to a huge storm that flooded the golf course.  Let me tell you that Augusta is not the only place hit with a hard winter.  Such a terrific golf course that is suffering from the crazy weather.

My next event was an LPGA tournament in CA at La Costa.  San Diego obviously is having better weather because the course was perfect.  Long course, small greens, sticky rough, and in pristine condition.  I arrived Monday evening, played practice round on Tuesday, player meeting Tuesday night discussing the globalization of the LPGA tour, 9 holes wed morning with lots of practice then teed it up on Thursday for my first round on the LPGA tour in 2010.  So exciting.  I played pretty decent on Thursday shooting 73.

As soon as I left the scoring tent, I am approached  by player services, Drug Testing.  3 ½ hours later, I was finally released.

Since my caddy waited this entire time, I thought it’d be a good idea to practice.  I have now been at the course 12 hours.  On Friday, I shot 78.  Moments of brilliance, but a very sloppy swing & game.  Missed the cut by 3 shots.

Jody caddies for Samantha Richdale on the LPGA.  They fortunately played the weekend…not great, but playing is better than having the weekend off.  Sunday night was our flight back to the east coast.  We were on separate flights, both red eyes.  I arrived in Jacksonville at 8:30 am.  Jody’s plane was supposed to be there around 9ish.  I waited and waited and waited in baggage claim…no Jody.  Finally at around Noon, Jody calls and proceeds to tell me this massive story about an emergency landing in Omaha.  Yep, he was in the middle of it all.  Did you see his mug shot in the paper?  Jody’s caddie expertise in dealing with crazy women came in handy on his flight. Article  We finally made it back to Augusta 24 hours later.

The Week at The Creek

Working on Hole 5

Working on Hole 5

The weather finally broke last weekend and the turnout was great. We hosted the Ladies Golf Association round robin tournament on Monday. All the ladies seemed to have a good time and we received a number of great comments

Wyman’s work on the bunkers is becoming very noticeable. The green side bunker on hole #5 has been completed and getting the proper amount of sand in all the green side bunkers is up next. The driving range has been re-seeded and the range is getting considerable attention. Irrigation on the course and the range has been a priority this week in preparation for spring. The greens and approaches have been sprayed again for poa annua and Wyman is happy with the progress.

There are a few things to mark in your calenders. Wednesday the 17th is St. Patrick’s Day and we will be having a Karaoke party at the clubhouse. The cost is ten dollars and we will have an Irish Dinner and as always a cash bar will be available. Lastly, a reminder that daylight savings begins this Sunday the 14th of March.

course construction. His last two positions were held at Champions Retreat, and Mt Vintage Plantation as an assistant  superintendent. He has worked with Course Crafters LLC, a golf construction company and has worked on the building of courses as far away as Portugal. Wyman is thrilled to be at Jones Creek and is looking forward to the job at hand.

The first 2 weeks I primarily worked on pruning low hanging limbs and improving bunkers – edging and replacing/repairing liners.  We have also made the bunker at 18 green more player friendly and repainted the greens.  In the coming weeks we will focus on getting the course ready for Master’s Week.  We will be spraying for weeds around tees, greens, and on fairways as long as Mother Nature cooperates.  We will continue to work on bunkers – sand and liner issues

I would like to say thanks for your cooperation and patience with the cart path only rule.  We will keep this in effect since we have had so much rain and snow.  This will make playing conditions better for members once things dry out. Spring is right around the corner and the golf course staff and myself are looking forward to bringing the course along to peak condition and something we will all be proud of.

PGA Show News..

We are finally back from the PGA Show and it was a success!  It really is an amazing place to go to, and if you ever have a chance to go, do it!  I can’t really put into words about how big the show is (770,000 square ft of display area), and how many miles we have put on our feet, but it is quite evident by watching Jim, Ray and I limp around when got back!  I went to many interesting seminars and heard some amazing speakers.  My favorite speaker Manuel de la Torre because of the unbelievable respect that other PGA Professionals were showing him when he was speaking.  He is one of the greatest golf instructors ever and has been the Head Professional at Milwaukee Country Club for the last 60 years (he is 89)!    I also have been learning about the biggest buzz word of the show, the growing world of “Social Media Platforms” (Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, etc).  If you haven’t yet, check out our fan page on Facebook, or follow me (Jonescreekpro) or Jones Creek  (Jonescreekgolf) on Twitter!

Off to the PGA Show….

This week, Ray Mundy, Jim Burton, and I will be traveling to the 57th PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida. The PGA Merchandise Show is a platform for nearly 1,000 vendors representing every business sector of golf. It is located at the spectacular Orange County Convention Center.

The week starts out Wednesday at the Eighth Annual Demo Day at Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge. This will give us a chance to check out the latest in technology advancements by the leading manufacturers in the golf business. More than 80 golf equipment companies will be there featuring everything from drivers, woods, and irons, to club fitting and instructional aides.

The next three mornings are packed with a wide variety of seminars about different areas of interest in the golf business. A few of the seminars that we are attending are; Developing Junior Golfers, The Consumer Research Model, and Retail Best Practices. The rest of the days will be spent trying to see what the 1,000 vendors have to offer!

This will be an exciting week for us here at Jones Creek and we are looking forward to coming back and sharing everything that we learned at the show with you!

My First Pro Tournament

Jordan Johnstun

I just competed in my first tournament as a professional which took place in Ocoee, Florida on January 12-14. I posted rounds of 72-70 totalling to an even par tournament, but unfortunately I missed the cut by 2 strokes. With 5 holes left to complete in my second round the Hooters Tour officials called the round due to darkness. I was even par for my round when the horn blew and knew I had to make a couple of birdies the following morning to make the cut. I was able to make only 1 birdie but was pleased with how I finished because the last few holes were the toughest on the course. I was happy with certain areas of my game and took a lot of positives away from the week, although I missed the cut. I found myself getting to caught up in “just trying to make the cut” instead of going out to try and win. As long as I keep learning each and every week I believe I will succeed. My next event will be the Hooters Tour Carolina Series in North Myrtle Beach, February 2-4. I will be sending out another post after the tournament. Thank you Jones Creek for all your support!
