US Open Bound

Nicole Jeray

Nicole Jeray

Finally some exciting news….I qualified for the US Open.  36 holes on the hottest day of the year.  72-73 to tie as low qualifier.  The US Open will be played at Oakmont C.C. in Pittsburgh where Jack Nicklaus won his first tournament (a major championship).

You have not seen me practicing at Jones Creek because my schedule brings me to the Midwest which is close to my Mom and Sister.  Ill have 5 tournaments in a row starting with State Farm Classic in Springfield, IL and ending with the US Open.  Vaughn Taylor only plays 2 or 3 in a row for a good reason – its exhausting and your brain gets mushy.  Unfortunately LPGA events are very limited so I will really have to make sure I pace myself with these 5.  You can follow my scores with real-time scoring at www.lpga.com.

Notes from Nicole

Terrific Masters!!!  I was very happy to see Phil win.  Even though I was rooting for Freddie, Phil is an awesome Champion.  Hopefully Phil is the family man that he appears to be.My play in Daytona Beach this week was not as terrific as what went on at the Augusta National.  I shot 73-75 to miss the cut by a few.  I will focus on my good shots, work on my putting, and visualize making birdies in my next LPGA event in Morelia, Mexico.Highlight of the week:  Playing the pro-am with the highest paid NFL kicker, Sebastian Janikowski.  He plays for the Oakland Raiders.   Great guy and a pretty good golfer as well.  He drove the ball a mile (in several directions) and rolled the ball extremely well on the greens.  We won the pro-am with our net score and had a lot of laughs as well.IMG_0868.JPG

Sebastian is the big guy on the left.  He is 2 yards short of the longest field goal ever.  (actually 1 yard…they round down the yardage when they used to round up)

Spring is finally here and we have been very busy trying to knock off a punch list of projects. Greens Superintendent Wyman Tyler and his crew have been doing a great job with the course. Early in March they tackled the bunkers, and have just about finished removing bad liners, evening out the sand and making all the bunkers consistent. Several applications were used on the greens and green complexes to get rid of the poa annua.  A number of dead trees have been removed and 143 stumps were taken out. A few of the greens had some bad areas  that have been re-sodded. These spots on the greens will be played as ground under repair. The wet parts of the fairways have been roped off to give the turf  a good chance to fill in. Being able to direct the cart traffic should help greatly and we really appreciate your efforts with this project.

The clubhouse area has received a bit of a face-lift as well. You may have noticed the patio now has umbrellas, and we hope you enjoy them while dining outside this spring. The columns around the clubhouse as well as the clubhouse  have been repainted. Over two hundred flowers have been planted all around the clubhouse area and we think it really looks great.  We have several more projects on the list and we will keep you posted as we get them done.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Masters Week.

I would love to meet you!!

Im am so excited to be representing such a fantastic golf club while I play the LPGA tour this year.  Jones Creek is a diamond in the rough – good people and great course.  I love the beauty of the tree-lined fairways and we all know what a challenge Jones Creek can be.  The practice facility is also fantastic.   My favorite spot is the back of the range where I can hit all kinds of  wedge shots to a green and beat buckets of balls from nice grass and side-hill lies.  The two excellent practice greens with nice sandtraps really help me keep my short game sharp.  Thank you Jones Creek for extending such a terrific facility to me.  Looks like the weather is going to get better so you all should see me out there preparing for my first event March 15.  Please stop and say hello. Id love to meet you and answer any questions you may have.   You can also visit my web site to learn more about me www.nicolejeray.com or follow my tweets at ww.twitter.com/golfnjeray  I will look forward to seeing everyone.  Happy golfing and remember “One shot at a time”

Jordan at Myrtle Beach

Jones Creek,
Last week I competed in a Hooters Tour Winter Series event in Mrytle Beach, SC. Due to bad weather the first round was cancelled and we were to play 36 holes on the second day. I started the tournament 6 over through 12 holes in very windy conditions and played my last 24 holes even par. I shot 79 71 and missed the cut by 2 shots.
All in all it was an enjoyable week. My father caddied for me which was very nice to spend some time with him. My next event wil be February 17-20 in Hilton Head. Thanks for the continued support!

PGA Show News..

We are finally back from the PGA Show and it was a success!  It really is an amazing place to go to, and if you ever have a chance to go, do it!  I can’t really put into words about how big the show is (770,000 square ft of display area), and how many miles we have put on our feet, but it is quite evident by watching Jim, Ray and I limp around when got back!  I went to many interesting seminars and heard some amazing speakers.  My favorite speaker Manuel de la Torre because of the unbelievable respect that other PGA Professionals were showing him when he was speaking.  He is one of the greatest golf instructors ever and has been the Head Professional at Milwaukee Country Club for the last 60 years (he is 89)!    I also have been learning about the biggest buzz word of the show, the growing world of “Social Media Platforms” (Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, etc).  If you haven’t yet, check out our fan page on Facebook, or follow me (Jonescreekpro) or Jones Creek  (Jonescreekgolf) on Twitter!

Brant Patton signs with Georgia State and College

Congratulations to Jones Creek junior member Brant Patton on his early signing with Georgia State and College. Brant, a senior at Lakeside High is an anchor on the Lakeside golf team. Watching Brant over the past few years has been a pleasure as he is one of the nicest young men we have had the pleasure to know. His work ethic is very high, and his game has continued to improve. This past summer Brant shot a low round of 66 in the final day of competition at the Augusta City Amateur good enough to place him second in a tough field.   Everyone here at Jones Creek would like to wish Brant all the best on his college golf career.  WAY TO GO BRANT!!!!

Kelby Burton signs to play at Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State head men’s golf coach Jay Moseley and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics have announced the early signing of Kelby Burton to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Owls beginning in the 2010-11 season.

“We are very excited to have Kelby joining our family at Kennesaw State,” said Coach Moseley. “He is a fine young man who comes from a very athletic family.  I am confident that he will come in next year and compete at a high level for us because he has a great desire to be successful and his golf game is improving exponentially.”

A native of Evans, Ga., Burton is ranked No. 157 nationally according to Golfweek and is No. 212 on the National Junior Golf Scoreboard. In the state, he is ranked No. 12 overall in Georgia and is the No. 6-ranked senior according to the National Junior Golf Scoreboard.

Burton, who prepped at Lakeside High School, has enjoyed much success on the junior circuit. This summer he posted a pair of top five finishes at American Junior Golf Association events. In the first of three nationally ranked events, he also had a runner-up finish at the AJGA Charles Howell Junior Championship where he shot a 2-under par 214 (74-69-71) including a 69 in the second round.

He also shot a shot a 9-under par 207 (66-72-69) to finish fourth at the AJGA Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic and posted a top 10 finish at the Bobby Chapman Invitational.

“Kelby has worked hard over the past eight months and has developed into one of the most promising junior golfers in the country,” boasted Moseley. “Although his drastic improvement over the spring and summer is not indicated in his ranking, I am excited because I know he is going to develop even more once he becomes involved with our team. The guys are excited about his signing and he fits right into our program’s philosophy to become one of the best college golf teams in the country.”
